This is a quick summary of the Irish Potato Famine.
In Ireland from 1845-1852 this was a popular sight.
Ireland's main source of food, potatoes, had been infected with potato blight making the potatoes black, mushy and unable to be eaten.
Oh no! What am I going to do?! All my potato crops are ruined! What am I going to do?
To avoid starvation, many people emigrated to countries such as Australia, Canada, United States and Great Britain. They traveled through rough weather and sacrificed their lives to leave their country. Some people made the journey and had successful lives but others weren't so lucky.
Disgusting! These coffin ships don't have enough food for everyone, are too overcrowded and stink too much. There's a very slim chance I'll make it out alive.
Back in Ireland, disease was still wildly spreading and starvation was a big threat so many people passed away.
Remember this didn't happen just 1 year, this happened continuously for 7 years! The Irish Potato Famine was the worst famine throughout 19th century Europe. Over 1.5 million people died and over another million emigrated. Ireland's population fell from 8 million to 6 million.
