Oedipus leaves Corinth to avoid the fate of the prophecy.
On the road, he unknowingly encounters Laius and his men and kills them in a confrontation.
Oedipus later encounters the Sphinx, who is tormenting the people of Thebes. He answers the Sphinx's riddle, which causes the Sphinx to kill herself.
As a reward, Oedipus is given the throne of Thebes, which is vacant since the death of Laius.
As king, he marries Queen Jocasta, his birth mother.
Unknowingly, Oedipus has fulfilled the prophecy of his birth.
