A long time ago there was a wind god, and two little war gods. The wind god blew wind so hard it made the earth tremble. The war gods did not like that.
The two war gods went to grandmother spider's house to get help. they asked how to get wind god to stop. "You must do what I say" said the spider "Take this cornmeal and take it to that mountain and put the cornmeal in the crack in the black rock."
the two war gods walked for four days, pushing against the force of the wind god's powerful winds. At the end of the fourth day, they finally reached the mountain, but the wind god blew his winds and sent the war gods tumbling back down.
The war gods climbed back up the mountain and poured the cornmeal into the crack in the rock, locking the wind god into his own home. The wind god blew and blew, but couldn't get out. Peace came over the land once again.
But once there were no winds, it became incredibly hot. So hot that all the animals were driven back into their dens and nests.
The little fellows discussed it and decided that they needed to unblock just a little bit of the cornmeal that was over the rock. Now only small cool breezes blew over the earth and all was calm. This is why only gentle breezes blow over Hopi land.
