  • Setting
  • Rising Action
  • Rising Action
  • "The Great Gatsby" takes place in New York City, West and East Egg (Long Island), and the Valley of Ashes around the 1920's. The West Egg symbolized new wealth, while the East Egg symbolized old wealth.
  • Climax
  • The rising action is when Daisy hits and kills Myrtle (Tom's mistress) in Gatsby's car with Gatsby riding along. Daisy was upset after getting into a fight with Tom, so she was not paying attention to see that Myrtle was approaching the car. Myrtle thought Tom was in the car; therefore, she was running towards the car thinking Tom would stop.
  • Falling Action
  • Tom goes to George Wilson after Myrtle was killed to help clear his name and Daisy’s. He takes George, Myrtle’s husband, aside from the cops and tells him that it was Gatsby’s yellow car that hit his wife.
  • Resolution
  • George Wilson went over to Gatsby’s house after Tom told him that it was Gatsby’s car that struck and killed Myrtle. With Gatsby floating in the pool, George shot and killed Jay Gatsby. Soon after George ended his own life.
  • Nick decided to plan Gatsby’s funeral since no one took action. He found out that with all of the big parties Gatsby hosted, only a small crowd showed up to the funeral.
  • Nick reflected on the whole East and West Egg. He decided to break up with Jordan and move back to the midwest. “So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.”
