The Epic of Shumkidu (Outline)

The goddess Ishtar sent the king of Nineveh to rule. The king was kind and just to his subjects and followers. However, his son Shumkidu, was a selfish and cruel prince.
The Normal World
Shumkidu is challenged to a fight. The fight begins smoothly, but when others join into the fight it gets rough. Shumkidu still manages to win.
Call to Adventure
Ishtar tells the prince that he is to be a hero, but Shumkidu denies this fact, saying he would not be strong enough. To test his strength and prove her point, Ishtar sends a monster for him to fight. After a battle that tired even the onlookers, Shumkidu wins and kills the monster.
Refusal of the Call
A messenger arrives, asking Shumkidu to kill off some beasts from the forest. Shumkidu agrees reluctantly and returns with the messenger to their city.
Crossing the Threshold
Shumkidu fights off the beasts in the forest, and kills them. The city thanks him greatly and promises to repay him for his efforts. Shumkidu says he will tell the city if he needs their help.
In a dreamlike place, Ishtar offers guidance to a place where Shumkidu can gain a weapon that can kill any monster. Shumkidu agrees and Ishtar gives him directions there, warning him of many dangers. Shumkidu thanks Ishtar for her great help.
