Brian Robesen, 13 fom NY, sees his divorced mom having an affair and becomes angry.
After Brian boards a plane to Canada to visit his dad, the pilot dies from a heart attack. Luckily, Brian learned a little about flying before he crashes into a Canadian lake in the middle of the woods.
Alive and alone, tattered Brian looks for food and shelter.
Brian encounters many adventures and conflicts such as when he gets sick from berries. He uses all resources available to him especially his hatchet. He thinks about his family and how angry he is at mom, yet calls out to her for help. His first realization that he must grow up.
Other adventures and obstacles that he faces are getting shot in the leg by porcupine quills, encountering a bear, learning to make a fire with his hatchet, eating turtle eggs, hunting for meat and fish, sprayed by a skunk, attacked by a moose, and lives through a tornado. All teaching Brian life lessons. They are all connected to his memories and family.
Brian returns to crash site to retrieve a survival pack and notices tail end of plane sticking out of water. While under water, he sees the dead pilot and gets sick. He does get the pack and messes around with a transmitter. Finally, a rescue plane comes for him.
