  • The front line soldiers of your immune system is the innate or non-specific defence system.
  • MACROPHAGES •reusable
  • NEUTROPHILS •one time use
  • The external barricades consist of your skin and mucous membranes. The internal barricades are phagocytes, antimicrobial proteins and other cells.
  • The NK cells patrol the bloodstream. If they find an infected cell, they 'poke' it with an enzyme .
  • Infected cell
  • Once, the first line has been overcome (eg. your skin gets cut) The second line come of the scene.
  • The phagocytes arrive: The first type of phagocyte being neutrophils the second type being fixed and free macrophages
  • Next, come the Natural Killer cells that patrol the bloodstream looking for invaders
  • But how do they know when they are needed and where? Cue your inflammatory system. It's like an internal fire alarm that sends out chemical signals.
