Medieval (500 AD-1500)
Between 1347 and 1350, a mysterious disease known as the "Black Death" (the bubonic plague) killed 20 million people in Europe—30% of its population.

The Medieval Period is often looked upon as a really dark time, but it did inspire Geoffrey Chaucer to write 'The Miller's Tale' around 1370.
The Renaissance period started in Northern Italy and eventually spread to other areas of Europe. People became more cultured - and begun appreciating art, poetry, literature, science and philosophy.
