Arnold believes that he does not deserve anything, he knows what he is destined, he wants to better himself yes he does, but when goes ahead and does it he gets hate for it. He is a significant characters because he really does reflect the struggle of most indian youth. "I looked goofy on the outside, but it was the inside stuff that was the worst."p.3
Rowdy is a boy with a troubled background, he is presented as lonely and aggressive, he's very bold and has to put up with a lot at home. He is easily the only friend that is known to Arnold. He is significant because he is able to stand up for himself even when it may be found impossible. "It's war paint, Rowdy always says, It just makes me look tougher." p.16
Mary is Arnold's sister, she gave up on herself as a student she dropped out of high school, but what was recently found was that she was actually a great student. She is significant because she is an example of many indians. "She was the smartest kid I ever had... Your sister wanted to be a writer." p.36-37
Mr. P was Arnold's math teacher, he was a white man that was sent to "kill the indian" out of the native americans. There was an incident which caused him to come to his senses and apologized to Arnold, also advised him to leave the rez. He is very significant because he is an example of many other white men on the rez. "That's how we were taught to teach you. We were supposed to kill the indian to save the child". p.35
Arnold's grandmother is very tradition like, she follows and lives by what indians are supposed to do basically, she atleast has a mind like them. She is very significant because she is the only adult that is there soberly for Arnold. "'Then you should have kicked him in the balls'.. she then pretended to kick a big guy in the crotch and we both laughed." p.68
Penelope is a very confident young girl who also makes fun of Arnold because of his name, she is very popular and may be a little intimidating for Arnold. However, Arnold finds her very attractive. She is significant because she is like an introduction to his new life out of the rez school. "..I was emotionally erect." p.59
