  • In a storm one night after all the boys attend a feast at Jack's place, a personage comes from the woods. The boys perform their savage ritual and kill it because they think it's the beast. It turns out to be Simon who was only trying to tell them that he had seen the parachutist and that it wasn't a beast at all.
  • Jack's clan has moved to Castle Rock and comes to steal fire from Ralph and the very few who stayed with him. In the night they come and steal Piggy's specks so they can create fire at any time. Ralph, Piggy, and Samneric decide to go to Castle Rock to talk to Jack and Ralph tries to take back power by calling an assembly. No-one listens.

  • Finally Ralph runs onto the beach and ends up defeated at the feet of a sergeant in the war who saw the smoke from Jack's fire and came to see. He asks who's in charge and Ralph steps up. They all begin to sob, remembering the terrors they've taken part in and realizing that they've completely lost their sanity.
