Greasers vs Socs
The church affected Ponyboy because he got closer with Johnny there. The fire that shaped the rest of Ponyboy's life happened at the church. It provided them shelter and a place to hide while they ran away. Although Pony was scared most of the time he was there, but he also was scared. He wasn't scared for himself though, he was scared that something might happen to Johnny.
The rivalry between the greasers and the Socs shaped who Ponyboy was. All he ever knew was fighting, and he never thought twice about if it solved anything else. Ponyboy never thought whether the Socs may be real people too, just like how the Socs thought of the greasers as nothing more than animals. Dally never did understand what was wrong with all of the fighting.
The hospital is where Johnny died. Even though Ponyboy would eventually start living his life again, he never got over the fact that the person whom he had gotten so close with was gone. Even though Johnny didn't mind dying for those kids, all of his friends did. Ponyboy's grades dropped, and he rarely talked to anyone anymore, but that's not what Johnny wanted to happen.
