Before most of the West was taken over by settlers, Indians lived off of the land. Some tribes had been on the land for a long time, while others arrived after escaping the trail of tears. Or others being removed from their land in the east.
Native Americans greeted their new neighbors by giving them food and supplies to help them travel through the West which the settlers knew little about because it was a new land to them.
But soon the American settlers started to take all of the food and resources from the land. They also pushed the Indians out of there homes, took over their villages, took their food and some Indians were made into slave.
For many years the American settlers and the Indians fight each other. The Indians would attack the settlers at night and kill them. Indians would sometimes trade furs with the french so they could buy guns. But the settlers had more guns and had used them longer. In the end, many more Indians died in battle then the settlers.
As the West became more and more populated, the Indians were greatly out numbered. They were rounded up and sent to live on reservations, reservations are land that the settlers did not want. They lived in poor conditions and many died while being moved to the reservations.
Today many Native Americans still live on reservations. Some of the biggest are in Arizona. They are suppose to be Indian nations, but are still controlled by the US government. Many still live in very poor conditions.
