Hi and welcome to the Take the First Step programme at Gensys Corp. I'm the HR manager Reuben.
We have a new employee joining our tech team shortly. His name is Bob and he likes Chinese food, travelling and cats. He has a Masters in Computers from MIT. Bob is also visually impaired. Before he joins, I'd like you all to keep a few things in mind
Some of us might feel a little scared and uncomfortable around Bob because we don't know how to interact with him. But I'm here to tell you that Bob's just like all of us, and at Gensys, we believe in taking the first step so that all new employees feel welcome and at home!
You might want to keep a few things in mind sometimes- like when giving directions to Bob, don't say "it's on the desk next to you. Say it's on the desk five steps to your right."
Similarly, don't forget that Bob is visually impaired- that doesn't mean he's hearing impaired too. You might want to keep that in mind, and refrain from yelling when you talk to him. Always say his name before addressing him too, so he knows you're talking to him.
There are many more things like this to keep in mind so as to truly make sure all of us are doing our best to take the first step!
