  • Achilles lives peacefully with his mother, a sea nymph named Thetis. When he was six he was dipped in the river of Styx. This river was going to protect Achilles from danger but the thing was that his mother soaked everything but his ankles (Tendons)

  • Achilles grows up and a vicious war arises between the Greeks and Trojans, and Achilles wants to get involved.
  • Crossing the Threshold
  • Thetis knows that if Achilles goes to Troy, he will surely be killed. She attempts to disguise him as a maiden in the court of Lycomedes, but Odysseus figures out his identity and convinces him to come to Greek camp to prepare for the war.

  • Achilles and the rest of the Greek army are faced with savage winds. Calchas explains that Artemis is angry due to the Greeks having killed a hare and her babies , and the only way to appease her and calm the winds down is to sacrifice the royal maiden, Iphigenia.

  • These winds are deadly !
  • The army reaches the mouth of the Simois, a Trojan river. They bravely disembark to make their way to Troy. Achilles remembers his mother’s word, thus knowing that he is to die before Troy is defeated.
  • Nine years later, victory between the Greeks and the Trojans continues to waver. Achilles enters a quarrel with Agamemnon, another Greek, over Apollo’s daughter Chryseis. After Apollo daughter returned, Achilles swears that Agamemnon will pay for what he had done.
