Theme: Revenge is not the answer.
Conflict: Montressor says Fortunato insulted him. Fortunato is angry and wants to seek revenge. We are not aware with what Fortunato did, but Montressor is very upset about it.
Foreshadowing: "He had a weak point--this Fortunato--although in other regards he was a man to be respected and even feared. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine"
Hyperbole: "The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could...."
Metaphor: "He turned towards me, and looked into my eyes with two filmy orbs that distilled the rheum of intoxication."
Dramatic irony: we know something that another character does not. Fortunato then tells Montresor not to worry about his health and that “the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill him. He will not die of a cough.” Montresor then replies, “True–true.” We all know fortunato is going to die eventually
