Storyboard Text

  • Eyes of Ekleburg
  • Green Light
  • Ominous Weather
  • "But above the grey land and the spasms of bleak dust that drifts endlessly over it, you perceive, after a moment, the eyes of T.J. Eckleburg. " The term "eyes" alludes the eyes of God, the only one who sees everything and judges everyone.
  • Valley of Ashes
  •  "Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future of that year by year recedes before us." The green light represents Gatsby's American Dream. In reality, it is a light located at the end of the dock to Daisy and Tom's house, but to Gatsby it represents all of his earthly desires, which is to one day have Daisy.
  • East & West
  • "The rain cooled about half-past three to a damp mist, through which occasional thin drops swam like dew. Gatsby looked with vacant eyes through a copy of Clay's "Economics," starting at the Finnish tread that shook the kitchen floor, and peering toward the bleared windows from time to time as if a series of invisible but alarming happenings were taking place outside" The weather is used to foreshadow events that will occur later in the novel.
  • Gatsby's Dream
  • "This is a valley of ashes, a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat int ridges and grotesque gardens; where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and, with transcendent effort, of ashes-grey men, who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air" The valley of ashes represents absolute misery and poverty.
  • "This party had personified a dignified homogeneity, and assumed to itself the function of representing the staid nobility of the countryside - East Egg condescending to West Egg." They both are the fancy zones of the country, and they also represents the rivalry between the newly rich people and the "old wealthy people''
  •  Gatsby's dream represents the American dream. After world war one people in America struggled in reinvent themselves and make money for a better life, and a new life with Daisy is what Gatsby sought.
