In "The Lottery", the protagonist is a woman named Tessie. She is a wife, a mother, and a housekeeper. During the story, she tries to voice her opinion on the event that is about to occur. Where they live, it is a tradition that they sacrifice a civilian for the better of their crops. Tessie wanted a change, but no one listened. Everyone liked her but no one was going to hesitate on stoning her because they all know it is tradition. A quote from the story where she voiced her opinion was when she said "There's Don and Eva", Mrs. Hutchinson yelled. "Make them take their chance!"
In "The Lottery", the antagonist would be the community. They all believe that the protagonist is being selfish in trying to cheat death by fighting for a different paper during their ceremonial tradition. The towns people all know that a family gets drawn and then whoever in the family gets the paper with the black dot, is the chosen family member. The protagonist would later die. A quote from the story that shows the community being careless is "All right, folks." Mr. Summers said. "Let's finish quickly."
The conflict in "The Lottery" would be the society within the community. The protagonist is in conflict with the antagonist. The two believe in different actions that should take place. A quote from the story says "It isn't fair," she said. "A stone hit her on the side of the head."
