This scene if ironic because Montressor is overly nice to Fortunato, even though he wants to kill him.
This is ironic because he eventually dies being trapped by Montresso which you could say he died from coughing if he became sick while trapped.
"the cough is a mere nothing; it will not kill me. I shall not die of a cough"
Fortunato is ironic in itself because his name closely resembles 'fortunate', which he is not because he gets very unlucky when encountering Montressor.
