  • Dramatic Irony in "The Winter's Tale" By William Shakespeare
  • The King believes his best friend and wife are having an affair. So he plots to kill his friend and lock up his pregnant wife; with what he thinks is not his child.
  • When the child is born he banished the baby girl. However, the Oracle of Delphi tells the king the child is his! She is lost forever.
  • This is dramatic irony because the audience knows what the couple doesn't. That she is actually a princess.
  • 16 years later the girl meets the prince, whose father was accused of having an affair. The two fall in love and try to get married but his father does not approve because she is not of noble birth.
