  • After Karl tells Simon his story, he asks for forgiveness. In response to Karl's question, Simon walks away in silence.
  • Karl describes the silence he experienced after his father boycotted him for joining the Hitler youth.
  • Simon went to Karl’s home after the war. When his mother discussed her 'good boy' instead of tarnishing her memory of him, he sat in silence.
  • Simon discusses the silence of God often with Arthur and Josek. They believe that God is absent in their time of need, thus His silence for the Jewish people.
