- CRUELTY LEADING TO DESTRUCTION

- One hole, one person. No more helping each other dig!

- The Warden is cruel and mean. She demonstrates her cruel authority with rattlesnake venom nail polish. In the end, her cruelty is rewarded with her arrest.
- "I will get you up the mountain Zero! Hold on"
- Kate starts as a nice school teacher, but when her love, Sam, is killed, she turns to revenge. She robs and steals, ultimately dying from the bite of a yellow spotted lizard.
- "I ended up getting arrested the next day when I tried to walk out of a shoe store with a new pair of sneakers. If I had just kept those old smelly sneakers, then neither of us would be here right now."
- Yellow Spotted Lizards are deadly. They are a sign of nature’s cruelty, brought on by the drought. However, their weakness is onions.
- WHEN FATE INTERVENES
- When Zero falls ill, Stanely rushes to get him to the top of Gods's thumb. In doing so he breaks the curse his family has been under. Saving Zero, a nickname short for Zeroni, fulfills the promise that Stanley's great, great grandfather made.
- When Zero tells Stanley that he stole Clyde Livingston's shoes but had to 'dump' them, Stanley realizes that fate brought them together.
- When Stanley and Zero uncover the treasure, they are shocked that the lizards are not going after them. It was fate that they found and ate the onions on top of "Gods Thumb". The smell of the onions kept the lizards away.
