  • Hehe this is kinda humerus.
  • DNA is a double-stranded helix. Like a ladder, but twisted. There are 4 nitrogenous bases and their bonds make up the 'rungs'
  • These pairs of bases form hydrogen bonds - the rungs. These are not easily broken - like love, 'till death do us part'.
  • The first pair here are adenine and thymine, and the second pair is guanine and cytosine. (medieval age = purines and greek = pyrimidines)
  • When DNA replicates, however, the hydrogen bonds must be broken. So the enzyme helicase comes and breaks them.
  • Now there are 2 separate strands. These will act as templates for new DNA.

  • Oops. I forgot to tell you earlier, but these strands have different orientations. Let me adjust the diagram for you.

  • 1 strand is oriented in the 3’ to 5’ direction (towards the replication fork). This is the 'leading strand'. 1 strand is oriented in the 5' to 3' direction. This is the 'lagging strand'.
