  • Bonjour Germany! We have more than doubled our armies between 1870 and 1914!

  • Austria-Hungary, would you do me the honor of joining my-
  • An alliance? Sounds clever. Hey France, you in?
  • Hm.. mind if I tag along?
  • Sure,why not? How about you Great Britain?
  • Oh, Germany! I thought you'd never ask!
  • Maybe, Maybe not.
  • Imperialism
  • 5 continents! Did you hear that? FIVE!
  • A country has a military and is willing to use it. The armies of both France and Germany had more than doubled between 1870 and 1914 after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870.
  • Nationalism
  • I am proud of who I am, and where I come from.
  • In 1879, both Germany and Austria-Hungary form an alliance. Later in 1882, Italy joins as well. They are called the 'Triple Alliance'. In 1894, France and Russia also form an alliance. In 1904, Great-Britain informally joins the alliance. They are called the 'Triple Entente'.
  • Nationalism Contributes to the War
  • I must be willing to risk my life to take pride in my nation?
  • When a country takes over new lands or countries and make subject to their rule. By 1900, the British Empire extended over five continents. "The sun never sets on the British Empire", simply a further explanation of how large the Empire truly is.
  • To take pride in ones nation. This produces a nations identity.
  • However, a deep feeling of patriotism was not always a good thing. This convinced people to become further willing to die for their country. This also intensified feelings of hostility between nations. (Jingoism: a hostile and aggressive form of nationalism).
