  • "The first Lady of the Renaissance"
  • Hello! Welcome to Mantuna, Italy. I am Isabella d'Este, an advocate of Renaissance learning, arts and literature.
  • Although I lived in Mantuna (where I died in 1539) for most of my life, I was born in Ferrara, Italy in 1474.
  • Because of my extensive learning, I was able to understand politics and debate with ambassadors, by the age of sixteen!
  • Growing up, my parents believed in equal education for both genders, so my sister Beatrice and I , learned Latin and Greek, Roman history, singing, playing instruments, astrology, and dancing.
  • Other than my sister, I also had two brothers, Alfonso and Ippolito. And at the age of sixteen, I was married to Francesco II Gonzaga. To him, I bore 8 children.
  • One of my greatest accomplishments, is that I taught women to break away from their traditional roles in society.
  • During my rule of Mantuna I also helped writers and artists achieve their goals.
