  • Well you can figure it out! Just use slope. We can go work on it in the office.
  • Have you noticed that the gap between the bridge and the road increases when it's colder out? i wonder if there is any constant difference between the temperature and the gap?
  • Then what.
  • Okay so you know that when it's 22°C the gap is 1.3 cm and when it's 30°C the gap is 0.9cm. What can you solve from that?
  • That being said, you would pair up the opposites (22,1.3) & (30,0.9)
  • Well first I found the x and the y which is the independent & dependent variable so 22 and 30 are the independent (x) and 1.3 & 0.9 are the dependent (y)
  • Then, you'd put the y numbers (0.9 & 1.3) on top of the x numbers (30-22) so that it would be 0.9-1.3/30-22 in fraction form which would equal -0.4/8 in fraction form again
  • After finding -0.4/8 i realized that it equaled -0.05. So i used the slope formula (y=mx+b) it got me to y-1.3 = -0.05 (x-22)
  • Wow! You figured out the equation!
  • But since the IV is the temperature and the DV is the width y would equal w and x would equal t so the equation would be w=-.05t+2.4
  • After that get rid of the parenthesis and it would look like y-1.3=-.05x+11. Then you would get rid of the 1.3 and add 1.3+1.1 which is 2.4 the final equation would be y=-.05x+2.4
  • Now you know the slope is -.05
  • At 35 degrees celsius the width is 2.9 cm and the gap would close completely at 48 degrees celsius
  • With that I can figure out how big the gap will be in any temperature.
