  • HOW TO SAVE A LIFE By: Sara Zarr 2011 Rian Gere English 10 Hour 4
  • The setting takes place in Jills Home which is a very high income home. It is winter time in the suburban area she lives in. It is modern time and shows the difference between the income classes. Significant quote "It's at least twenty degrees colder than it was at the train station this morning. I lock the doors behind me quickly, wishing I'd brought gloves." P. 42
  • Jill is the hero in the story she was born to two wonderful wedded parents with lots of money but her father has passed in a car accident. Her and her father got a long very well but after his passing Jill has shut everybody out. Including her mother who feels as if she has failed at raising her. Significant quote "When he was here, I knew who I was. If i forgot, he'd remind me. In theory, I should be the same person now I was then. He died, not me." P. 3
  • Jill's struggle is letting people love her and letting herself love others. Since her and her father were so close it's hard for her to be the same way she was before her father died. Her struggle is showing love to others and not being so stuck up and rude to others just because her father is gone. Though it is hard for her to do this because her mother is making crazy decisions that impacts their new life style. She's going to realize that her life isn't as bad as she thought and could be ten times worse.
  • Significant quote "Let us get used to eat other, the people we are without Dad. "Mom," I tried again, but she probably thought I was going to keep berating hair and said, "No, Jill, I've made up my mind. It feels right. A death, and now a life." p. 9.
  • The antagonist of the story is her fathers death. His passing has caused her to change who she is and become a complete different person. Its changed her life emotionally and because of it she's going to be a big sister. His death is the antagonist because she has to fight against the way she's turned because of him. Her mother an her don't get along especially since he died. Significant quote "Mom and I, different as we are, are twin planets orbiting the same universe grief but never quite making contact." P. 41
