  • Act 1 Exposition
  • In Denmark, the former king has died & a group of soldiers tell his son prince (Hamlet) they saw his ghost. Hamlet learns his father was poisoned by his own brother who has taken over the throne and married his wife!
  • Conflict
  • Hamlet feels that he must seek revenge on his father’s behalf. However, he struggles with whether he should believe the “ghost” or not.
  • Over the next few days, Hamlet uses tactics to prove his uncle Claudius killed his father. He plans a night where the local theatre acts out a play that shows a king being poisoned in the ear (just like Hamlet's dad was!). Hamlet thinks that Claudius' reaction will prove his guilt or innocence.
  • Act 2 Rising Action
  • Act 3 Climax
  • Claudius is moved by the play and runs off to pray for forgiveness for killing Hamlet's father. Hamlet overhears this and wants to kill him however, he thinks if he kills Claudius while he is praying, he will go to heaven- which he doesn't want!
  • Hamlet accidentally kills someone he mistakes for Claudius so his uncle/ new father hires his friends to find Hamlet so he can be hanged. Hamlet escapes.
  • Act 4 Falling Action
  • The son of the man Hamlet mistakenly killed fights Hamlet; he poisons the tip of his sword and Claudius poisons a cup; and in a twist of fate- Hamlet's mum Gertrude dies. Hamlet and his opponent (Laertes) are both stabbed. Then, Hamlet gets his revenge. In the end only Horatio (Hamlet's friend) is left standing to tell the story.
  • Act 5 Denounment
