  • "What the hell you want to play football for? You need more meat on those bones. What the hell you trying to play quarterback for? You'd make a better end. Maybe"(pg 9).
  • I am going to make the team! I will not give up!
  • "What the hell you trying to play quarterback for? You'd make a better end. Maybe" (pg 9).
  • Why are you staring at us? We are not inferior to you. You are a square boy with your same, boring routine.
  • Fine then. I'll help. I'll get them involved.
  • Help with the chocolate sale,"you have influence, Archie."
  • What!!!!!!
  • After the first practice, the coach doubts Jerry's ability to play football. Jerry is determined to make the team. This is the first time Jerry's determination is revealed.
  • No. I will not sell the chocolates. I will not accept them(because of the Vigils assignment).
  • What!!!!!!
  • Jerry is waiting at the bus stop. One of the drifters come over from the other side of the street because Jerry stares at them. The drifter says something which affects Jerry throughout the story.
  • No. I will not sell the chocolates.
  • Brother Leon and Archie discuss the chocolate sale. Brother Leon wants Archie's help since he is the assigner of the Vigils and thus he has influence. Archie agrees to help since it would increase the power of the Vigils.
  • Why did I say no?
  • Because of mom's death? Dad's boring routine? Why?
  • Jerry says no to Brother Leon the first time during the roll call. Everyone is shocked. Some people suspect it is a Vigils assignment. Brother Leon begins to hate and despise Jerry but does not show it.
  • Now that the Vigils assignment is over, Jerry still refuses to sell the chocolates. Everyone is shocked. However they are shocked even more as Jerry was acting on his own accord, not because of the Vigils.
  • Jerry lies in bed and contemplates why he refused the chocolates. At this moment he connects it back to his early encounter with the Drifter.
