  • Slavery
  • Hey Bill, do not fear, you will find your family. I am sorry you guys got separated. Do you miss South Carolina?
  • Thanks Joe. I miss them very much and SC. Hopefully, we will be able to one day move to a free state, instead of GA.
  • Nullification Crisis
  • I heard that SC was going to secede, bc they didn't want to renew the tariff law.
  • Yeah, but the president threatened them, so they are not anymore
  • Compromises
  • What's wrong?
  • omg what. why?
  • Slaves don't even have a chance to runaway bc of the new compromise.
  • Bc of the Compromise of 1850:(
  • One of the two main causes of the Civil War is the debate of slavery. The north did not want slavery because of their manufacturing economy, while the south did due to their agricultural economy. The North wanted to keep it contained in that one area, while the South wanted to expand it. This caused a delicate bond between the North and the South.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act
  • The two compromises were repealed because Congress decided states should decide.
  • Oh wow so now slaves have a chance to runaway!
  • The second main cause was the debate over states rights. Some argued that the federal was getting too much power. Oftenly, states nullified, or ignored what they were told to do. South Carolina disagreed with renewing the tariff law,so they nullified. However, the president threatened to attack them kept the nation together. In Georgia, when they lost the Worcester VS GA cased they nullified it and continued to push natives off.
  • Dred Scott
  • Yo, I feel so bad for the Dred Scott.
  • Why what happened?
  • Since some states wanted to be free and some wanted to be slave, they had to balance representation in Congress by passing compromises. Missouri wanted to enter as a slave,so they added Maine as a free to keep it equal(Missouri Compromise). Later, California wanted to be added as a free, but no other state was to be added as slave state. So, they passed the Fugitive Slave Act(return of runaway slaves). This compromise is known as the Compromise of 1850 .
  • Election of 1860
  • Georgia was deciding to approve the Compromise of 1850,while it was raging in Congress. If passed it would allow the free states more representation in Congress(imbalance). Georgia ended up approving this act by the help of Alexander Stephens. He was a supporter of slavery and had a lot of experience. However, the Kansas Nebraska Act came where is said that states should decide whether they want to be a free or slave state by voting. By this act, the Missouri Compromise and the Compromise of 1850 was repealed.
  • I have to tell Joe this great news!
  • The Dred Scott case, which started in 1834, weakened the bonds of North and South.Dred Scott was a slave that was taken to free territory and claimed that he should be free and the repercussion was a lawsuit. The eventually ended up in the Supreme Court, which ruled that they were black and they can not even sue people. Also, ruled that Missouri Compromise is unconstitutional and Congress can not stop slavery in new territory.
  • He was a slave that lost the court case bc they said they said he does not have rights.
  • The election of 1860 was the final event that led the nation to war. Lincoln won and it was the first time that a had been elected from only one section of the nation. Since Lincoln disagreed with slavery, The southern states feared Congress would be made of pro-abolitionists and wanted to secede. The general assembly of Georgia voted in favor of secession and became part of Confederate States of America. The vice president was Alexander Stephens, even though he was against secession. He was mainly VP because of his strong political background.
  • So tAbraham won, and they south hads ceeded.
  • Yeah I heard, it is pretty crazy.
