American Diplomats were outraged as the French, now called X, Y, and Z, demanded a bribe.
When told what happened, the Federalists demanded war, but James Adams wanted peace.
America released dispatches, and the French were enraged, wanting war.
The French eventually gave in, and the problem was solved by a treaty in 1800.
