  • The Punic War started all because Rome and Carthage wanted the island of Sicily. The Romans didn't win at first. They were used to fighting on land. Carthage was used to fighting on the sea. So this was an advantage for Carthage.
  • Punic War II
  • Come everyone, this way.
  • The Punic war lasted for about 20 years. But then in 241 b.c ,Rome had won the island of Sicily! Carthage was upset, not just because they lost, but also because Rome made them pay a huge fine.
  • Punic War III
  • After the first Punic war Carthage conquered Spain. Rome helped Spain rebel , but they still lost. Carthage found out that this happen, so they sent the great general Hannibal to attack Rome. This is how the second Punic war stared. Hannibal's army had gone to Spain.
  • Punic War III
  • All of you get to work.
  • He had about 46,000 men, horses and 37 elephants. He marched his army across the Alps and into Italy. The cold weather and the attacks killed about half of his men and the elephants were killed too. When Hannibal's army rebelled Italy, they beat they beat the Romans and began raiding Italy. Even though Hannibal's navy beat the Romans Scipio (a Roman general) Hannibal left to protect his people. So Carthage gave Spain to Rome and they had to pay another huge fine.
  • Carthage know loner had a military power. But it was still a rich trading center. When Rome soldiers found out they were still a rich trading center, they burned down the city.

  • Over 50,000 men, women, and children were enslaved. They also put salt all over the city, so they no longer could plant or grow anything there. This was the third Punic war. After Rome had done this to Carthage, Carthage was a province, or a district.
