Storyboard Text

  • Hi! I am due in just a few weeks and I was wondering if I could speak to an neonatologist, just ask her a few things about her job?
  • Welcome! How may I help you today?
  • Sure, I will call her over right away!
  • Very cool, thank you.
  • What education did you need to get this job?
  • What do you do?
  • Hi, I was wondering if I could ask you a few questions about your job.
  • I had to complete four years of undergraduate school, four years of medical school, a pediatric residency and a neonatology fellowship. I also became licensed as a medical doctor by passing the United States Medical Licensing Examination.
  • Yes, of course, anything.
  • I am a pediatrician but I focus on the care of infants with special medical needs and I work mostly in the NICU.
  • Ok, let's head to your room.
  • How are the working conditions?
  • What characteristics are needed to be successful in this job?
  • They are pretty good. I work here in the hospital, the hours are a little hectic, I work 12 hour-shifts and switch off with my co-workers. Sometimes, it gets stressful and hard, but I still love it.
  • You need to be confident in high-stress situations, you need concentration, kindness, and always keep a positive mindset.
  • I get paid about $225,564 a year.
  • Well, a big one is if we lose a patient. Another disadvantage is that our patients cannot communicate with us, we don't know exactly where it hurts or how bad, you really need to stay focused and be prepared for anything.
  • What are some unfortunate disadvantages of the job?
  • One huge advantage to this job is obviously successfully saving a patient and to watch them grow up into amazing young people., it's very rewarding.
  • To our healthy baby and to thank Dr.Jones for letting this be possible!
  • Another, smaller, advantage to this job is that you mostly deal with newborn babies who are significantly lighter and so the job is not always as physically demanding.
  • YAY!
