The American Nurse Association defines delegation as transferring responsibility for the performance of an activity or task while retaining accountability for the outcome. It takes a team to provide excellent care for a client, however the RN has sole responsibility for the quality of the nursing actions.
Patient safety is the first priority, especially when delegating tasks. As an RN knowing the five rights of delegation is key: The right task, circumstance, person, communication, supervision.
Remember, team work is vital in providing excellent care for all clients. Knowing your role and the role of others will aid in the process of delegation. Evaluation and feedback will sharpen the performance of all.
