Theme: subject or moral of the story
Symbolism: when something stands for something else for a deeper meaning
The moral of the story is to not be selfish. The narrator was ashamed of Doodle and taught him to walk so he wouldn't need to carry him around, though soon felt bad because he was thanked but he only did it for himself, not for Doodle. Also at the end of the story when the narrator left Doodle behind in the storm and Doodle ended up dead when he returned.
One symbol mentioned in the story was when Aunt Nicey said that Doodle was special and wasn't going to die because he was born in a caul; cauls were made from Jesus' nightgown. (cauls are people born with a thin membrane covering the head)
