The snowman is a symbol. In the beginning of the book when Jem and Scout were building a snowman in Mrs. Maudie's front yard, they ran out of snow. They wanted to finish their snowman so instead of waiting till it snowed again they used dirt. When they finished building the snowman it was a mixture of white and black. This is symbolic because the black dirt and white snow worked together to create a masterpiece. It's kind of like Harper Lee meant to use this as a way to describe black people and white people working together in order to peacefully coexist.
