"Adrienne, please help."
"I was out one night, and I saw Dakota kicking a yellow bug. It was beat out and old; she looked super mad too."
"A yellow bug? Who owns a yellow bug? Hmm..."
Adrienne Knox received a frantic voicemail from her ex-best friend Dakota Webb one night asking for help. Against what? Adrienne doesn't know.
"Fine, Adrienne, I'll give you an extension on your essay. It's due next Tuesday."
"Please, Mr. Murphy, I just need another extension!"
The police have reason to believe that Dakota had committed suicide, and they have a funeral for her.
Adrienne and her mother's boyfriend Sam talk about how he had seen a yellow VW bug that an angry Dakota was kicking.
"It's not you; it's me."
"Uhhh...yeah, it's you! You don't even care about me anymore! I thought you loved me, Adrienne. You love a dead girl more than me, and that's not cool. Bye forever!"
Adrienne, eaten by grief and the need to find a yellow VW bug, begins to dress as Dakota would and forgets to turn in an essay to her English teacher Mr. Murphy.
Adrienne enlists the help of Dakota's hot/cold ex-boyfriend Julian Boyd. Together, they break into Dakota's house to look for clues. They find a jacket with dates that pertain to her band's gigs. There are two dates that aren't band gigs, and Julian doesn't know why.
Adrienne and Lee, her boyfriend of a long time, break up because Adrienne has become too obsessed with Dakota and won't pay attention to him anymore.
