Storyboard Text

  • Catcher in the Rye
  • “It was the Saturday of the football game … I was standing way the hell up on top of Thomsen Hill … You could see the whole field from there, and you could see the two teams bashing each other all over the place … You could hear them all yelling.” (Salinger 1-2)
  • Catcher in the Rye
  • “When I finally got down off the radiator and went out to the hat-check room, I was crying and all … I guess it was because I was feeling so damn depressed and lonesome. The hat-check girl was very nice … I sort of tried to make a date with her … but she wouldn’t do it.” (Salinger 82)
  • Throughout the course of this novel, Holden desperately searches for someone who will talk to him and understand his feelings. Many times, he is rejected and is unable to connect with anyone. Examples of this are Mr. Antolini, Stradlater, Sunny, and Ackley, who Holden feels are too different to understand him.
  • Motif #3 Money and Wealth
  • Paul's Case
  • “He had not a hundred dollars left; and he knew now, more than ever, that money was everything, the wall that stood between all he loathed and all he wanted.” (Cather 19-29)
  • "His only reason for allowing Paul to usher was, that he thought a boy ought to be earning a little." (Cather 9)
  • Paul's Case
  • “on every side of him towered the glaring affirmation of the omnipotence of wealth.” (Cather 16)
