  • During Dred's time in Wisconsin, he met a slave named Harriet Robinson and married her.

  • Dr. Emerson died in 1843 and Mrs. Emerson hired Scott out to another Army captain
  • but, Dred Scott was already trying to arrange freedom for himself and his wife.
  • Scott offered her $300 for their freedom. She refused and the couple took the matter to court filing separately.
  • The couple took the matter to court saying that they had lived for extended periods in a free state.
  • Their petition claimed they were free. On June 1847 their first trial was tossed out on a technicality.
  • In an 1850 retrial, the couple got their freedom for only two years until they got it taken away by the Missouri Supreme Court.
  • The case was taken to the Supreme court and the couple fought for their freedom and in the end, they never got it.
