  • Charlemagne has been called the "Father of Europe" (Pater Europae),[3] as he united most of Western Europe for the first time since the Roman Empire. His rule spurred the Carolingian Renaissance,
  • Charlemagne already ruled his kingdom without the help of the Pope, but recognition from the pontiff granted him divine legitimacy in the eyes of his contemporaries.
  • charlemagne served as a source of inspiration for such leaders as Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) and Adolf Hitler (1889-1945), who had visions of ruling a unified Europe.
  • Once in power, Charlemagne sought to unite all the Germanic peoples into one kingdom, and convert his subjects to Christianity
  • In his role as a zealous defender of Christianity, Charlemagne gave money and land to the Christian church and protected the popes.
  • Charlemagne died in 814, having ruled as emperor for just over thirteen years. He was laid to rest in his imperial capital of Aachen in what is today Germany. His son Louis the Pious succeeded him
