Unexpectedly, the men watch for a brief moment as fighter planes swiftly speed over the city and let gravity unload their bombs. Blown off their feet by the blast, they realize that the city is utterly destroyed.
Montag pictures Mildred as her swiftly approaching death comes, and has a flashback of meeting her in Chicago. He begins to memorize the Book of Ecclesiastes as the reverberations of the explosion subside.
The book ends with the men heading back towards the city to assist the survivors in recreating themselves from the ashes.
