  • Louis XIV Left France in trouble. The spending was off the charts, the debt was going up, and the harvest this half-year terrible. The French couldn't take it, so they decided to rebel. To pour salt into the wounds, King Louis made Estates, which separated the peasants from royalty. The First Estate, which was the king and queen. The Second Estate, which was nobles. And, finally, the Third Estate, which makes up 97% of the French population, and it's completely peasants. The Third Estate had the giant disadvantage, because the other Estates would vote against anything they voted on.
  • The Third Estate had had enough. They decided to band up together and meet up at a tennis court in Versailles. The king didn't like it, so he shut the doors on the Third Estate. This was called the Tennis Court Oath. Afterwards, the Estate went to Bastille and freed 7 prisoners. This was called the Storming of Bastille. Today, this day is known as Bastille day because it is the day the French Revolution started.
