  • Calpurnia's Lesson
  • By watching her I began to think there might be some skill in being a girl
  • Scout has her gender constantly policed by her family and in this scene Aunt Alexandra wants her to behave more feminine but this experience with femininity further strengthens her rebellion against traditional gender roles.
  • Jem's Attitude Reversal
  • I think it's time you start being a girl
  • After Tom Robinson's trial Jem asks Atticus why women can't serve on a jury to which he gives a very sexist remark.
  • Fixed into gender roles
  • Calpurnia was Scout's sole positive female role model and by watching her she was able to take pride in her gender for the first time.
  • Jem's Initial Attitude
  • You're such a girl!
  • While Jem openly berated her at first he later switches his opinion on Scout's behavior. He now wants her to conform to gender roles and becomes embarrassed for her masculinity.
  • Scout is forced into a dress to meet with her family and is obviously uncomfortable
