King Pelias was starting to become more and more frustrated. Thetis his wife had given birth to six sons, but each one died during infancy. This worried him because he wanted a son to take his role a as king.
Thetis wanted to go back to being a sea nymph but as fate had it they had another son named Achilles.
Thetis was so determined not to lose this son she took him to the underworld without telling her husband. She dipped Achilles in a river by holding him by his heel. The river made it that he was invulnerable everywhere but his heel that Thietis was holding him by.
King Pelias was starting to get suspicious about Thetis When she and Achilles came back he kept a close eye. That night he was pretending to be a sleep. Thetis took achilles out of bed and dipped him in the fire. Right as this happened he jumped out of bed took Achilles out of the fire. Thetis was so furious because if she had finished that step then he would be immortal.
Thetis couldn't take this anymore of this and left to live a life as a sea nymph leaving her husband and son alone. King Pelias was distressed for losing Thetis.
King Pelias sent Achilles to live with centaur Chiron where he would teach Achilles to be a warrior. They grew a great bond and he taught Achilles to fight, music, healing, and athletics. He grew up to be a great warrior and his skills were unsuppressed.
