- The Nationalists, who favored the strong government Became known as Federalists.
- Many were not happy with the Constitution. They became known as Antifederalists.
- Antifederalists argued that the Constitution did not protect the rights of Americans from the government. Thomas Jefferson, who was not an Antifederalist, said that their should be a bill of rights to protect the people.
- Freedom of Religion, was one of the rights Antifederalists believed should be protected.
- Trial by a jury was another right that Antifederalists wanted to ensure the protection of individual rights.
- Freedom of speech and the press would be protected by the Bill of Rights.
- With the addition of the Bill of Rights the United States Constitution was ratified and became the law of the United States.
