We need to do something before we drift away even further!
There once lived a young woman, Wairaka. Her father was the chief of the Ngati Awa tribe and captain of the Matutua Waka.
One day, the tribe travelled by waka to invade another tribe's land, the women were told to remain in the wake until it was safe to leave. But; as time went on the waka began to drift away from shore.
Where's my brother?
As women, staunch physical ability was looked down on and power of sacred activity (e.g. controlling the waka) was prohibited. So Wairaka prayed to the gods to give her the strength and permission to pull the waka back to shore.
i suppose i can settle here.
Sacrificing her regard, Wairaka rowed, then heaved the waka back to shore. Saving the waka and the wives of the men.
After her bold act, Wairaka decided to visit her brother in Tamaki Makaurau. When she arrived, her brother was no where to be seen.
Given she had no home or family around, Wairaka settled on the maunga, now recognised as Owairaka.
