On the way down to the Amontillado, Fortunato begins to cough uncontrollably. Once he has stopped coughing, Montresor tries to persuade him to turn back. Fortunato, however, proclaims that he will not die from the cough and continues on, towards the Amontillado. This is verbal irony because he will end up dying that night, but not because of his cold.
The audience knows that Fortunato will die at the end of the story, before Fortunato himself finds out his horrible fate.
The story of the Cask of Amontillado takes place during Carnival season. This is an example of situational irony because you wouldn't expect murderous revenge to occur during such a merry and joyful time.
