THE BIRD SHOP
Today, I went to the pet shop. I saw a bird that I really liked and I decided to buy it.
I set up the cage excitedly and feed it. It is delightful to have a pet bird around, especially because its distinctive chirping cheers me up. However, sometimes I wonder if the bird would have led a happier life if he was not a pet, if he was free to roam in the wild.
A few nights later, I dream about being locked up in a cage. I envision myself looking out through the cage's gaps, wishing that I could be set free.
When I wake up, a deep thought strikes me: is the bird happy? I wonder if I should let him go, as I am starting to believe that it must feel horrible to be kept in a cage.
I decide to let him go, because I realise that if I truly love something, or someone, I should let them have their own freedom, not hold it tight. Loving is to be able to let go.
A few weeks later, I still feel sad over the fact that my pet is gone. One morning, I wake up to the sound of noisy chirping. I glance at the windowsill, seeing that it is a bird. I nearly fall back to sleep until I hear the distinctive chirp, and realise that this is the very same bird I have set free. This is true love.
