Rainsford is fighting the battle with himself that he can fight the general and he is smart enough to outwit him. He ends up getting lucky and getting away but throughout the story he keeps telling himself that "I must keep my nerve."
He ended up making the smart decision and jumping in the sea because he knew it was hopeless to fight the hounds head on. He lost the battle of courage within himself to fight another day. He ends making a smart decision in the end of the story
His final decision ends up fruitful when the general wants a duel with him and loser gets fed to the hounds. He ends up winning and sleeping peacefully at end, knowing that he won the battle with himself to beat the general.
