  • "A poor excuse for picking a man's pocket every twenty-fifth of december!" said Scrooge.
  • While shutting down the counting house Scrooge encounters his clerk who wants the day off for Christmas. Scrooge thinks that spending time with family is a bad excuse for not making money. This shows he is slef-centered and greedy
  • "You'll want all day tomorrow, I suppose?"

  • "If quite convenient, sir."
  • "I wear the chain I forged in life."
  • This scene shows Marley's ghost wearing the chain that he created in life. The symbolism is that the chain and the things on it came from Marley's bad things in life and Scrooge is afraid it will happen to him.

  • Scrooge trembled more and more.
  • "to whom will our debt be transferred?"
  • "Nothing is past hope, if such a miracle has happened."
  • This shows Scrooge is unloving and mean. Caroline's family owes money to Scrooge but are happy he is dead because they don't owe the money and because they don't have to deal with him.

  • "No, Spirit! Oh no,no!"

  • This shows theme because it is the effects of change. Scrooge knows he is going to die but if he changes that might affect the future.

  • "Incessant torture of remorse."
  • This shows Scrooge is scared of what will happen to him and wants to change before the end. Scrooge need to change his bad ways and learn lessons from the ghost.
  • This symbolizes that Scrooge is changing and there could be hope. The future is not definite and the spirit shows that it is changing and there is a way to prevent the death from happening.

  • For the first time the hand appeared to shake.
