In the novel the green light is represented as something special for Gatsby that he desires or wants. The green light to Gatsby represents what many call the American Dream. It is something that he wants in his life what he strives to have in his future. To Nick this makes Gatsby seem very hopeful as he does not give up on what he wants.
“He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock."
"And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby's wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy's dock."
Analysis 1 and 2 for each scene
One night Nick is sitting in his backyard observing the area around him when he sees a man he can only assume to be Gatsby looking and reaching for what appears to be a green light across the water. The green light symbolizes Gatsby's want for something. He wants something that he once lost at this point in the story when this quote said it is unknown what Gatsby is reaching for. All that is known by the reader is that he wants something but it is unknown at this point what. It is mentioned numerous times throughout the novel and every time it is mentioned it is about Gatsby and and some sort of thing or dream he had which he wants to fulfill. Although he does not fully realize that the things he is reaching for are practically impossible. The fact that Gatsby really believes in this green light truly makes the reader feel the same that Gatsby may actually reach what he is looking for.
Later in the novel it is found out that the green light is located at the end of Daisy's dock. The reader later finds out that part of what Gatsby is reaching for is Daisy. Gatsby and Daisy 5 years ago had a relationship and Gatsby had never moved on but Daisy had and all Gatsby can think about is how much he wants her. Part of Gatsby's green light or American Dream is to be with Daisy but sadly does he know that will never happen again. But throughout the story Gatsby dreaming of the green light and his dreams makes him a very hopeful person. This really affects Nick making him truly believe in Gatsby and also gives Nick himself hope that he will fulfill his own dreams. It really makes the reader wonder if the American Dream is something that can really be reached or achieved. It is sad that Gatsby never reaches his American dream and is shot dead by Wilson for a big misunderstanding. It saddens the reader that Gatsby never truly gets to see his goal.
